To Heimlich Or Not

A dog choking can be very scary. It happens in a split second. Be prepared.

Because there are many signs that can be confusing to understand, it is especially important for dog owners to know the difference between these actions and actual dog choking signs. Often times, what may sound or look like choking, is actually an indication of another type of condition. For instance, many owners confuse when a canine is coughing gagging, reverse sneezing or vomiting to be signs a dog is choking when that actually is not the case. Being able to distinguish a minor issue from a potentially fatal one, will not only help to keep your own stress and panic to a minimum but your animal’s as well.

Pet Pals Enrichment Series

Pet Pals rolled out the Pet Pals Enrichment Series. This is an all encompassing series that teaches you how to help stimulate your dogs brain and keep them active inside, some people also call this brain games. Follow the hashtag #PetPalsEnrichmentSeries for all the post!!! When pets learn a new task that ends in the acquisition of food (i.e. work for their food); they receive mental enrichment and stimulation! That time and effort they spend with their use of both mental and physical skills is highly rewarding and builds great confidence.

For example, some toys require your dog to manipulate them to get a food reward. This provides the dog with opportunities to scavenge and explore and thus, requiring it to expend mental and physical energy to accomplish the task. In contrast, if your dog gets all its food from a food bowl, it does not have to work or use any energy to obtain the food.

Professional Pet Sitter, Why It Matters

Many in the pet services industry distinguish a professional pet sitter from what they call a, “hobbyist sitter”. Amongst other things, it's often suggested that a professional pet sitter goes beyond their commitment to excellent pet care and maintains pet-sitter insurance and bonding, has any necessary local business licenses or permits, uses a pet-sitting service contract, offers proof of a clear criminal history and demonstrates their knowledge through industry certifications. While this concept is dated, it holds value still today and yet there remains room for improvement. Moreover, despite the massive growth of the Pet Sitting industry, there is still no regulatory authority that oversees whether a person is a *professional pet sitter* or “hobbyist sitter". While education, obtaining business license/permits, using a contract, providing background checks, insurance, and bonding certainly does show that a person is committed to being a professional, there still remains no legal definition or set of requirements. So, how Can You Tell the difference between a Professional Pet Sitter and a “Hobbyist”?

Losing A Pet

If you have suffered the loss of a pet, know someone who has, or unfortunately preparing for that day....please read on. Pet Pals also talks about the stages of grief in this post.

"A pet parent's worst fear is losing a beloved companion. For those who have experienced this loss, there is usually a poignant story to share about a cherished dog or cat’s passing. From one pet owner to another, we understand the intense pain and emptiness that occurs after this loss. There is no correct way to grieve and work through this process, as everyone walks down a different journey with a pet.

A pet may symbolize a child, sibling, best friend or long-term companion. Dogs and cats live an average of 13 years—enough time to truly enter and live in your heart. They become a part of your family and daily life. Your morning routine may not be complete without playing fetch or going on a walk with your dog or snuggling with your feline.

5 Reasons Why A Senior Pet

Talking about senior animals in this blog post. There are plenty of healthy, active older dogs hoping for a second chance at life. They end up homeless for many reasons, but many share one thing in common. They are overlooked for younger, cuter dogs, because face it…who doesn’t love puppies. They are adorable and they can’t wait to explore the world around them. It can be rewarding to raise a pup into a healthy, strong adult, but it requires a lot of work. There is nothing wrong with adopting a puppy, but there are a lot of great reasons for considering adopting an older dog. They need homes just as badly, and they can make loving, loyal companions.

4 Types of Dog Walks

Pet Pals types of Dog Walking include:

1. Potty Walks - this type of walk has a simple purpose for the dog to go poop, potty, or both. When a dog gets on a walk the digestive system can get going and thus help the dog “go”. Smelling different scents can help the dog go potty as well. This walk is not intended to release any energy and is short in length.

2. Mentally Stimulating Walk - this type of walk allows your dog to stop, explore with their nose, mark scents to let other dogs know they were there, etc. Also known as “sending pee mail”, all of the aforementioned stimulus and more get the brain active. That active working brain burns a lot of energy. This type of walk typically ranges from 15-60 minutes.

3. Training Walks - these walks have an intended purpose of working on a goal. Whether that goal is to improve leash manners, take sit and stay to the next level in an uncontrolled environment (inside your house is a controlled environment), advance obedience commands, or help your reactive dog learn new skills; training walks are a very good way to burn energy! Make sure to ALWAYS end training walks on a positive note.

4. Power Walks - this walk is to help your dog (and maybe you) get the aerobic exercise we all need. Generally in this type of walk, there is no stopping to smell, pee, poop, or sniff. It is pure walking/jogging/running at a pace your dog and you are comfortable with to burn an overabundance amount of energy. On Power Walks it is very important to stay aware of your dogs tolerance to the high activity and not over do it. Still, these power walks can be a great starter to training walks!

All of these types of walks are important and help create a fulfilling, well rounded, and healthy life for your pet kids. You can incorporate them to increase your dog’s happiness or simply Hire Pet Pals! Your pets will thank you!

To accomplish this; Pet Pals' was available 24/7 and worked countless hours being there when needed for everything from our services, to answering and solving your pet related questions/concerns, or just to let you in your house when you got locked out. In 2019, like each year before, Pet Pals went beyond unsurpassed service to people and their pets to also serve our Community. Pet Pals also gives directly to people in our community through our 12 Days of Christmas Giveaway. Pet Pals is involved and gives year-round to fundraisers, non-profits, being a animal foster family and more, because being the best for our Clients is simply not enough.

Cats are making a name for themselves. These hot-shot superstars in funny cat videos, memes, reels, and TikTok videos. So why not give them a special month of glory where we can celebrate their stubbornness, independence, and selective self-sustainable being. February is for the cats, and more specifically it's for their health, it is called National Cat Health Month." Pet Pals encourages every cat parent to spend the month with extra focus on their cat's physical and emotional well-being, and research signs of unhealthy behavior or illness. Pet Pals has compiled 3 tips to help ensure your furry cat friend stays in tip-top shape. 1. Litter boxes should be in a well-lit, quiet, and ventilated room of the house that's easily accessible to your kitty. It should not be in a dark, noisy place because he may choose not to use it. You should also clean it once a day. It's a good way to notice changes that may be a sign of health issues. 2. Even though cats spend approximately five hours a day grooming themselves, they still need our help to stay happy and healthy. Depending on the length of your kitty's hair, you'll want to make brushing part of your weekly or daily routine. 3. Yes. Feline pet parents also need to get their kitties used to nail trims and teeth cleanings. Slowly get them used to have their paws and nails touched. Do the same with their teeth and gums. An excellent way to start with dental health is by having them taste kitty toothpaste. Extend ‘agape’ love to your kitty friend. As Albert Schweitzer once said, “There are two means of refuge from the misery of life – music and cats.” Pet Pals - Pet care, dog walking, and dog mentor experts in the Sioux Empire committed to making people and pets' lives easier, healthier, and happier. Your Pet Will Thank You! Happy National Cat Health Month! Brag about you cat in the comments, pictures and/or video encouraged!
